Wax Wings
A solo card game about flying too close to the sun.
The game
Wax Wings is a solo game by Hunter Rising, played with a deck of feather cards. The sun climbs for ten rounds. Each round you meet its heat with sets of matching feathers, or the wax gives and a pile is lost. Reach Icaria with six of your twelve piles intact and you land.
Our approach
Adapting a paper game is mostly a question of what to take over and what to leave alone. The rules are the original's, unchanged. What the browser takes on is the bookkeeping that makes a solo game tedious: dealing, tracking the heat, working out which sets are legal. What's left is the decision each round, which was always the interesting part.
The look
The wings on the title screen aren't an image — they're a 3D mesh rendered live and halftoned into gold dots, so they hold up at any size, down to the favicon. In play, the wings are the board itself: twelve piles laid out in the shape of them, thinning as the sun does its work. The rest is warm dusk on near-black, serif type, and no chrome that doesn't earn its place.
How it's built
A SvelteKit app on Cloudflare, with the wings drawn in WebGL. No account, no install — open it and play.
